Year six have a had a busy year so far. They have been down to London to visit the Natural History Museum and the National Gallery, they have also been lucky enough to spend 2 nights at Holt Hall where they participated in a whole range of outdoor pursuits such as orienteering, night walks, shelter building, bush skills and camp cooking!!! Check out our pictures form these trips!!!

The team at Holt Hall...we had loads of fun!!

Year 6 Topic

Our topic this term is all about designing and running a virtual underwater theme park. All of out maths, literacy, science, DT, art, music and geography will be into this project.
So far we have designed our islands using geographical mapping symbols, later on we will be calculating the area and perimeter of our islands.

We made a clay mountain and placed it on our islands, we had to produce accurate contour lines to show the height of our mountain.

In DT we are designing and making the rides for our theme park. They must contain a series of cogs. Check out our pictures to find out how we got on making simple cog systems.

Maths Challenge

During maths we were challenged to work out how tall the following mountains are using the scale 1mm = 1m.

Mount Everest Nepal 8850m
Mount McKinley USA 6194m
Kilamanjaro Africa 5895m
Mount Kosciusko Australia 2228m
K2 India 8611m
Ben Nevis Scotland 1344m
Snowdon Lake District 1085m
Carrantuohill Ireland 1050m
Beacon Hill Norfolk 103m
Scafell Pike Lake District 978m

We then measured the mountains out on the playground. When we realised a human could be 1.5mm tall on this scale, we were stunned by how big these mountains really are.

Year Six Intrepid Explorers!

Welcome to our Year Six team.

This year we are really looking forward to learning through three different themes, one per term.

Our first theme will begin with everyone in our class designing an undiscovered island. It will be the centrepiece for the rest of our work this term, involving the study of mountains, habitats, maths investigations and mysterious stories that will keep you on the edge of your seats! We will be creating fantastic futuristic fish as part of our 3D work in maths and learning about absorption rates in science through our watercolour landscape painting. We can solve different chllenges to become Island Rangers and help to ensure that we look after the world we are building.

Please watch this space to see how our learning journey unfolds and the discoveries we make on the way.

Thanks for visiting our page. Call in again soon.
